Preppy McPrepster

Cardigan: Old Navy
Shirt: Ralph Lauren
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Sperrys
Necklace: Charter Club
Belts: Claire*s (broken necklace) and Joanns
So remember that long pearl necklace I wore all the time (last seen here)? Well, if you tug on them hard enough, they break. I've had this one for about three years or so now, when I was last forced to go out and buy a new one when it broke last time for the same reason. However, I sort of hate throwing things out, and I like to find a new use for everything. So, now that it's broken, I can actually put it through my belt loops. Sweet!

So the question is, when am I ever go to learn? Probably never, but I'm trying. Anyways, at least these things aren't too expensive, and are usually super easy to find in Claire*s, where it always seems to be prom season and these are apparently appropriate.

On to my look du jour. Well, I was stumped yet again, and had no idea what to wear, despite having a full closet of beautiful clothes. So I went digging through my t-shirt drawers, until I found this crisp white polo. I figured I would go for a super prep look, like I like to frequently do, and pair it with khakis, Sperrys, and more pearls.

Where are you spring?

Jacket: DKNY
Tank: J. Crew
Skirt: Express
Belt: Juicy Couture
Shoes: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Tights: Hue
Earrings: gift
Definitely an improvement from yesterday right? Okay, so it's basically the same outfit that I wore here, but what do I care. I love this springy skirt, and I love how it looks with these violet tights, so I'll definitely be pairing them together again. Honestly though, I just can't wait to wear this skirt with bare legs. However, considering that Maryland's weather is extremely bi-polar (and it's only 42 degrees at the end of March), I could be waiting awhile...

Same old, same old.

Cardigan: Lilly Pulitzer
Camisole: Theory
Tank: J. Crew
Pants: Banana Republic
Shoes: Coach
Belt: Gap
Necklace: gift
Not exactly my best look ever, but I'm dressed and presentable! School is getting crazy yet again, and I'm still having a hard time staying on top- not leaving me thinking about what I am wearing as much as I usually do. Hopefully I'll be back in the swing of things soon!

Just not in the mood

Cardigan (borrowed from the neighbor): Maurice's
Tank (borrowed from the neighbor): Maurice's
Pants: BCBG Max Azria
Shoes: Coach
Necklace: Betsey Johnson
Today, I was attending a networking event at school, and the attire was business professional. Usually, not a problem since I love dressing up and wearing typical work clothes. Today, I was just not feeling it. I'm really tired (noticed my eyes are barely open), and I really wanted to just wear jeans and a t-shirt. But unfortunately I could not do that. Maybe tomorrow...

Cherry Blossom Festival

Yesterday, instead of spending my entire Friday in the student union working on homework, my boyfriend and I decided to go to the Cherry Blossom Festival in D.C. I had SO much fun, and got to eat so much good food! All in all, a great day. Here is a recap in photo form.

Yours truly. Notice how much black I'm wearing...this never happens.
Only one of the best bakeries in D.C, where I bought a red velvet
whoopee pie, and a caramel cupcake. Best money spent ever!
Note the plane about to fly into it! Ah!

I feel pretty

Jacket: Diane von Furstenberg
Dress: BCBG Max Azria
Shoes: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Necklace: Charter Club
After spending the past few nights staying up late cramming and writing papers, and topping it off by staying up until 2 a.m last night writing my French film paper, I wanted to look pretty today as a hooray to finishing all my work!

Yesterday I didn't even photograph my outfit. It's not that it was bad, just boring, and I was way to busy yesterday to have time to take photos (which I almost never am).

Anyways, I got the inspiration for this outfit from one of my friends, in a weird enough way. She came over yesterday to raid my closet for a professional look for an interview, and this one of the outfits she tried on. When she put it on, I fell in love with how it looked. I had never thought about the combination before since I just got the jacket hand-me-down this winter, and I hadn't worn this dress since last summer. However, I am still in love with how it turned out.

Here's to the weekend!

Spring Awakening

Cardigan: Ann Taylor Loft
Camisole: Ann Taylor Loft
Skirt: BCBG Max Azria
Shoes: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Earrings: Alfani
I am drowning in homework. Honestly, I cannot even catch a breath or catch-up it seems like. So I'm doing homework non-stop basically until Thursday evening.

Yesterday there were freshmen hanging outside on the quad, reading magazines, laughing, and having fun. When my roommate and I heard the chatter coming up to our room, we just looked at each other and sighed. What I would do for it to be freshmen year right now!

In other news, I just discovered classes for next fall (aka senior year-EEK!) are up online. You bet I found another distraction.

P.S- You know my tank and cardigan and old because the tags still say "Ann Taylor Loft." Now it's just "Loft." Whatever, as if I care.

P.S.S- I swear I'll be in a better mood by Friday!

Snap back to reality...

Shirt: Forever 21
Tank: J. Crew
Skirt: BCBG Max Azria
Shoes: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Belt: Charlotte Russe
Necklace: Claire*s
Wristlet: Coach
Earrings: gift
So today is my first day back at school after returning from alternative spring break in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. And let me tell you- it's hard to go back to the real world after being on such a wonderful vacation.

I think this outfit is kind of dedicated to the trip though. Despite the temperatures being in the 40s currently, my mind still thinks I'm in Florida, where it was a beautiful 80 degrees everyday. Because I had to wear shorts and tees the whole trip because I was working, this is something I would have worn there if I could.

More about the trip later...but for now, back to the mountains of homework I have to catch up on!

Inside my wristlet

I love knowing what other people keep in their purse. Always have, and always will. I remember as a kid always going through my moms purse just digging around, seeing all the fun stuff she kept in there. So I thought today I would let you take a peak in my wristlet to see what I tote around. I would show you what I keep in my purse, but during school, I just carry a wristlet. Maybe in the summer (when I actually use purses), I will do a post on what I keep in there. I consider my wristlet to be just the essentials.

The Wristlet
First, let's talk about my wristlet. I got in my freshman year (2008) when I noticed that NO ONE in college carries a purse- everybody had a wristlet. I'm serious. To everyone who is going to college next year, I would highly recommend not bringing a purse everywhere with you; you'll stick out like a sore thumb. Anyways, so I was on a hunt to find a wristlet that was not flat, and was meant for more than just carrying credit cards. Let me tell you- that was a daunting task. Finally, I found this one from Coach, and I have been using it ever since (notice how beat it up it is- it literally goes everywhere with me). It fits all of my basic essentials perfectly, and fits easily in my school bag.

Wristlets like these are even harder to find now, so if you see one like this (Coach or not) grab it! Now, it seems that all of the wristlets have zip-tops, or they are fold over. Either way, they don't hold as much as mine does. You will probably have your best luck at Coach outlets, which is where I bought mine. Or, feel free to check out the selection available on the Coach website.

What's Inside
This is an honest photo of what I keep in my wristlet- I didn't clean it out or anything! (from left to right)

Tide-to-go: I am a great sales person for this stuff. All you do is dab a bit on your shirt, and rub in. When it comes time to wash, the stain should come right now. Seeing as I am a clumsy person, I end up spilling or getting stuff on myself all the time.

Tampon: Just in case.

Student I.D: Because how else would I get into my dorm, buy junk food at the Blazer, or get meals at the dining hall?

Softlips Chapstick: Best. Stuff. EVER. I think you can buy two in a pack for a little less than $3.00 or something like that? It's available in a bunch of different scents (although I prefer vanilla), and they all have SPF. I seriously haven't found anything else that keeps lips softer, so this is must have.

Hood College Spring 2011 Sports Schedule: So I can instantly check if my roommate has a tennis match or not, in addition to when/where future spring sporting events take place.

Hood College Pen: You never know when you might need to jot something down- so be prepared!

Orbit Gum: To get rid of gross breath after garlic bread, to wake up when you are falling asleep in class, and for sharing (even the last piece)!

Midol: It's always good to have a little medicine on hand.

Hairbrush/ Mirror: I love this compact brush/mirror. If I need to check up my make-up, or want to make sure there is nothing in my teeth, this is perfectly discreet. Plus, for being as little as it is, the attached brush does a great job at detangling wind-blown hair.

Hood College Lanyard and Keys: Yes, I still have the lanyard they gave out to everyone on the first day of  freshman year, and there is no way I am getting rid of it! I think it is one of the only pieces that I have that says Hood College on it that I have had throughout my entire time at school. Plus, it's in my class color, which I love. Attached, I have some store reward cards, a mini sharpie, safe keys, and my dorm room key. Don't you love the little key cover? So cute!

Ping Pong Balls- I swear, me and my boyfriend and roommate play intense ping-pong at least once a week. These are NOT ever used for anything else. I keep two in my wristlet because I never know when we might play, and the ones kept in student lounge always seem to go missing.

Coconut Lime Verbena Lotion from Bath and Body Works: Dry, itchy hands? Got a couple of fly aways? Lotion to the rescue! This is one of my favorite scents, energizing, but not overpowering. This stuff is really soothing, and is super cheap.

Band-Aid's: At least three, always. Did you not see the part about me being super clumsy?

That's basically it. I noticed there are couple of things I don't have in the picture that I usually do, so I decided to include them as well.

Hair Ties: When you realize it wasn't the right day to wear your hair down, you can instantly pull it up.

Bobby Pins: Usually four or five. I have a lot of little pieces of hair that tend to fall out a lot.

Tums: At least five. I tend to get stomachaches a lot, and these work in a pinch.

Well, that's what is inside my wristlet Pin It

Wardrobe Essentials- Part 3

DISCLAIMER:This is from my blog required for class at school. I didn't plagiarize

So this is the third post in my series on wardrobe essentials. Today's focus is on tops and tees, which I know we all have too many of. However, hopefully with this post you can eliminate some of the clutter in your closet, and be able to more easily put together outfits in the morning.

Essential #1:  White Tanks and Camis

Credit for both: J. Crew
I have been wearing J.Crew tank and camis since the 10th grade, and now I don't know what I would without them in my wardrobe. I think the tanks are perfect for laying under spaghetti strap and strapless style dresses, adding just a little bit more coverage. Camis, which are basically lighter weight versions of tanks except with spaghetti straps, are great under too revealing v-neck tee shirts and gaping button-down shirts.

However, the only problem with these staples is that nice ones run a little pricey (each one ringing up $18 a piece), and if you wear these staples as often as I do, they wear out fairly quickly.  However, there is still a way to get the quality you want, without  paying such expensive prices-outlets! J.Crew stores can be found at most outlet malls across the country, including the Hagerstown Premium Outlets. Here, you can find these wardrobe staples at about $6 or $7. So grab a bunch (at that price, in all different colors), and enjoy the savings!
Essential #2: White or Blue Button-Downs

Credit: Ann Taylor and Loft
Just like with all of my other posts on wardrobe essentials, I always try include business appropriate attire: something that will transition from a college students wardrobe effortlessly into a wardrobe of a working woman. In this case, it's button down tees. Now, I love dressing down button-down shirts with jeans, flats, and cardigans. However, I know these shirts will be perfect for when I graduate, worn in the office with heels, dress pants, a-line skirts, and blazers. I recommend getting shirts in neutral colors, such as white or blue, that way they can be worn with many different outfits in many different ways. In addition, make sure the shirt fits properly over your bust to avoid the gap at the top buttons. If you see that gap, go a size up, and have the rest of the shirt tailored to fit you if needed.

Essential #3: Short-Sleeve and Long-Sleeve Shirts

Credit: American Eagle and Old Navy
Finally, I would recommend stocking up on basic, solid colored, short and long-sleeved t-shirts. They are perfect for layering, and work with just about every outfit.  No matter what the season, these shirts will transition effortlessly and serve as great layering pieces.  Although I would advise buying these in neutral colors such as white, black, and gray, if the price is right, feel free to purchase a couple in fun colors- navy blue, hot pink, or lemon yellow for instance. Or if you are going for an extra preppy look, go for breton stripes, my personal favorite. Either way, look for v-neck or crew-neck necklines, which will work for the most amount of outfits.

What do you think? Did I forget anything?

Wardrobe Essentials- Part 2

DISCLAIMER: This is from my blog required for class at school. I didn't plagiarize!

So this post is the second in my series on wardrobe essentials. Today I will talk about pants that I believe every college student (and every woman) should have in their closet.

Essential #1- Dark Wash Straight-Legged Jeans
Everyone probably has a couple of pairs of jeans in their closet. But if you need to have one universal pair, choose a pair of dark wash, straight legged jeans. A pair in this style will never go out of fashion, and will always look classic and chic. They perfectly transition from class, to on a date, to church, or out to a bar. You can wear these jeans with flats, with heels, or tucked into boots. While I love this pair from American Eagle, I would also recommend checking out Gap and Levis.

When you buy a pair, make sure there isn't any whiskering (the faded stripes on the upper thigh of the pants) or rips. Try on a lot of different sizes until you find a pair that fits. The perfect pair will not give you any muffin top, and the end of the jeans will just hit the tops of your feet (just like in the above photo). If you can't find a perfect pair, buy one that is just about right (and a little big), and take it to the tailor to be made just for your shape. After you get the perfect pair- take care of them! I cannot express how important it is to take care jeans- they will last so much longer! When you wash your jeans (which you should only do when they are dirty, not after every wear), turn the jeans inside out, zip up the zipper, and put the button through the loop (ensuring the zipper or button won't get caught on anything in the machine). Wash the jeans in cold water, and let them air dry. If you follow all of these steps, the color will not fade anywhere near as fast, and the pants will last much longer.

Essential #2- Black Dress Pants
Like the blazer I talked about in the last post in this series, I think that a lot of college students may not have black dress pants. However, everyone should go out and buy some immediately! Although these aren't something that you need to wear to class, you'll appreciate them when you have no idea what to wear to an interview, or have a professional job to go to.

When you go shopping, bring a pair of heels that you frequently wear with you. That way, when you try on pants, you can ensure that the pants are long enough for your dress shoes. Also, make sure to look for a pair that about an inch below your belly button so they are not too high or low-rise. Since this is a pair of pants that you will be wearing in a professional setting, you want to make sure they are appropriate for any occasion.   If you are looking for more dress pants options, check out Loft and Macys.

Essential #3- Khaki Pants
Credit: Target
Just like black dress pants and blazers, I don't think that enough college women have khaki pants. Let me tell you- these are such a staple! They always look classy, and like you put in more effort than the girl who is next to you in jeans (when you really didn't). Perfect for brunch, going to church, class, and adding an extra preppy touch, I don't know how anyone does without these. In addition, khakis are a staple for many workers who have to dress alike. Whether I'm working at Target over school breaks, or doing tours on campus, I always need a couple of pairs on hand.

Look for a relaxed cut made in a forgiving fabric, like the pair above from Target. Although it is nice to have dressier khaki pants, I think traditional cotton pairs will be easier for college students to build outfits around.  For more khaki pants options, I would recommend Dockers and Old Navy.

Wardrobe Essentials- Part 1

DISCLAIMER: This is from my blog required for class at school. I didn't plagiarize!

Do you ever feel like you have nothing to wear despite having an overflowing and cramped closet? Me too. However, it really shouldn't be this way. So that's why I'm doing a series on wardrobe essentials. Things that can be worn in multiple different ways, and can easily transition from season to season. While it is fun to by things that are trendy, they are usually a fad by the next season. So stayed tuned for this series on how to make your closet more versatile. Today's focus-jackets.
Essential #1- The Jean Jacket
Credit: Old Navy
So the first thing I included in my jacket essentials was this jean jacket from Old Navy. Honestly, I wear my jean jacket with just about everything. It works well for every season, whether it is the only jacket I am wearing (like to an early spring baseball game,) or one of my many layers in the winter. When looking for a jean jacket, look for ones in a classic blue-jean wash, not too light or too dark. Also important? There shouldn't be any rips or shredding on your jacket, you want it to work well for every season.

I love jean jackets with summer dresses, skirts, or plain t-shirts. The only thing I would not recommend is wearing denim on denim- you don't want to look like Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears at the 2001 American Music Awards, right? If you are looking for more options, I would also recommend checking out the selection at Gap and Eddie Bauer.

Essential #2- Black Blazer
Credit: Loft
Some college may students may disagree, however, a black or gray blazer is most certainly a wardrobe staple. Although they are most commonly seen with dress pants or a skirt, they can work in so many other different ways. They look great over dresses, with jeans and a t-shirt, or silky camis. A blazer is something you're definitely going to have to invest a little more money on, but they are completely worth it. After graduation, a blazer can help your wardrobe transition from that of a poor college student, to one of a successful employee.

When you go to look for your blazer, pay close attention to the fit. Lift up your arms to make sure the sleeves are long enough, and that it covers your stomach. Button all of the buttons, and make sure it doesn't pull across your chest. If it doesn't fit perfectly, go one size up. Then, take it to a good tailor so it is made to fit you specially. If you are looking for more places to find a black blazer, I would recommend looking at the options available at Victoria's Secret and Anne Klein.

Essential #3- Black Cardigan
Credit: Old Navy
Although a cardigan isn't exactly a jacket, I'm counting it as a top layer. Either way, neutral colored cardigans are a great wardrobe staple. Like the jean jacket I mentioned earlier, they work great every season as the top layer, or one of many layers. I love wearing mine with graphic t-shirts, camis, and colorful scarfs. Again, I chose my staple from Old Navy, because I love the diverse selection of sizes they offer (even tall and petite!) and how soft their cardigans always are. However, if you are looking for more options, I would recommend American Eagle and J. Crew.

Well, that finishes the first part of my series. What do you guys think-did I forget anything?

Aruba Blue

So I've been meaning to do this post for awhile, but it's just now getting up. Things have been busy.

Anyways, for the ring ceremony about two weeks ago, I knew my hands would be on display more than usual, so I knew doing my nails was a must! In addition, I knew I didn't want to them in any boring, traditional color; oh no. In fact, I had bought a new bottle (which I try not to do too often...) just for the occasion: Essie's Aruba Blue.

Let me tell you- I am so in love with this color! Although it takes quite a few layers to get the deep color I was looking for, it was completely worth it. It's a beautiful shade of sapphire that I really did not do justice to in my photos. However, it was perfect for the ceremony since my school colors are blue and grey.

I can't wait to try it with glitter....typical. Just thinking about it now makes me excited- with my white glitter, with blue glitter, or with blue and pink glitter. OR using it with an electric blue for a twist on a French manicure.

Okay, I'll stop geeking out now. P.S- I've included a close up of my ring just for your viewing pleasure. Hope you enjoy!

Bon Voyage!

Well, goodbye for now my little blog. Tomorrow, I am off to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. for an alternative spring break trip with my school, leaving you all alone.

But fear not, my readers (what are there, two of you? probably not even that). I have some scheduled posts lined up, so feel free to check those out until I am back on Saturday. I can't wait to tell you guys about the trip then! Pin It

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Dress: Laundry by Shelli Segal
Shirt: Target
Shoes: Juicy Couture
Socks: Forever 21
Necklace: Claire*s
Umbrella: Target
Well, I'm curious as to what kind of comments this outfit will merit from my male friends today. I mean, I know the jumper is going to throw them off. Personally, I love the jumper. I love layering shirts under it, and wearing it with tights, and all kinds of stuff. But most people associate it with elementary schoolers, I think. Whatever.

In other important news, it's raining today. However, I am quite please with the ensemble I came up with. Usually I just stick with jeans and t-shirts on a day like today where it is just going to rain all day, but I thought I would try something different. I tend to get really hot when I wear my rain boots with jeans, so hopefully this dress will do the trick.

And finally- I'm wearing pearls for the third day in a row! Not that this is really important, but I just like that I have worn them differently every single day. Also, I got them at Claire*s. Like a year ago. So that's kind of embarrassing, but that just shows you can always find something if you know where to look. I think.

I'm a nerd?

Cardigan: Old Navy
Shirt: Theory
Belt: Juicy Couture
Pants: Delia*s
Shoes: Coach
Necklace: Claire*s
Glasses: Prada

Here are the commens I received from some of my guy friends in regards to my look today:
"Hello Britney Spears- I mean Katrina."
"You look like a secretary!"
"You look like a nerd! Push up your glasses!"

Seriously. What. is. wrong. with. my outfit?! I think I look super cute, and was so comfortable all of today. Apparently, I look like "Britney Spears in 'Hit Me Baby One More Time,'" a secretary, and a nerd. Awesome.

Whatever, what do boys know about fashion?

I know what your wear glasses? I do, yes. Mostly just for distance, so when I am driving, or in class, but sometime when my head is really bothering me (today) it helps to wear my glasses for awhile. So that's why I am wearing them.

EBEW- Polka Dots

Shirt: J. Crew
Skirt: I.N.C
Shoes: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Necklace (worn as belt): Claire*s
Bracelets: Sergio Lub and Coach
Tights: Hue
I have been waiting to wear this skirt for awhile now, and when EBEW announced that the next challenge would be polka dots, I knew this would be perfect!

I figured if I was going to wear polka dots, I wanted to go preppy. Go big or go home right? So I paired this with some pearls, navy tights, and plain long-sleeved tee. I was originally going to even go more preppy and wear a breton striped tee with this, but it just didn't look right. I need to learn how to mix prints and feel confident in them.

Check out how I wore this skirt the last time  and let me know what you think of both! Side note- I look SO young in this!
