What I keep in my Purse

Inside my Purse from heytherekatrina on Vimeo.

I forgot how much I enjoyed making videos! So this week, I decided to do an update on what I keep in my purse. I know I just did one of these last summer, but I thought it would be fun to compare the too (I'm a loser, you don't have to tell me that). Hope you enjoy!

A week in iPhone Photos

I spent almost all of last week in NYC and had SO much fun! Before I went to college, my mom, aunt, and I used to go to NYC twice a year (in the summer and in the winter) for a couple of days to see a show or two, and shop of course! Once I was in college, doing that was near impossible with all the school work I had to do and working two/three jobs at a time. Now that I'm unemployed for the time being (yay...) I actually had a chance to join them again! It was just like old time. To capture all the fun I had, here's my week in Instagram - the NYC edition.

1. Splitting lunch on the first day with my mom - a chicken sandwich with bacon and tomato on a pretzel roll, sweet potato fries, and garlic green beans. Yum!

2. My mom buys things in Bloomingdales, I take pictures of myself in the Kate Spade section.

3. Drinking lemonade from a local Maryland company (yay Maryland)!

4. I am the biggest 6-year-old you've ever met. Pigs in a blanket at Bolmor Lanes!

5. One of the lanes at Bolmor Lanes had a clown theme...

6. Nothing like walking by Radio City every night back to my hotel.

7. Overstuffed burritos with lots of gauc, please!

8. Reflection on the globe outside of United Nations. This was our tourist destination for the trip!

9. We could not figure out for the life of us why so many people were doing yoga on Broadway on a 100 degree day. Turns out they were celebrating the summer solstice. And there were over 14,000 people.

10. Inside United Nations. So cool!

11. These shoes are TOO cute! The soft fabric, the pretty lavender shade, the peep toe, and the feathers! The question is...where would I ever wear these other than to a wedding?

12. Best way to enjoy the 3 hour train ride home? A seasonal key lime donut (actually so good, don't judge) from Krispe Kreme and a trashy romance novel on my Kindle! Pin It

Cute As a Button + Enuf is Enuf

"Cute as a Button" by Essie (the shade on my ring finger) has been one of my favorite polishes of the last year. It's the perfect coral color! It looks professional whenever I attend a business function, but it's still a fun color for the summer months too.

However, I was getting a little bored just wearing it on it's own or with glitter. So, for this week's mani, I paired it with my new Essie polish "Enuf is Enuf." Such a bright, feisty color! It's not quite red, but it's clearly not pink either. If I had to describe it, I would say it's kind of like a dark shade of coral. It's really a pretty color!

Summer 2012 Haul

Summer 2012 Shopping Haul from heytherekatrina on Vimeo.

Hi guys! I know this week I've been kind of MIA (but I have a good reason, I swear)! But now that I'm back from NYC, I'm back on my typical job hunt grind.

Today, I decided to post this summer haul of all my recent finds. I hope you all enjoy!

P.S - the password for the video is summerhaul. I didn't want it circulating the interwebz, but figured it was safe here. Let me know if it doesn't work! Pin It

A week in iPhone Photos

Here's my weekly round-up in Instagram! I had a pretty busy week, and this is how it looked through my eyes.

P.S: Follow me on Instagram (heytherekatrina) and Twitter  to stay up to date with me! (if you aren't already!)

1. Blood Orange sorbet from Ciao Bella. Do I even have to say anything?

2. The boyfriend and I before heading to D.C. to see The Music Man.

3. New stationery! I got this at Target, surprisingly. They have a great selection of prints that are colorful and fun, without being super expensive.

4. I love being a girly-girly and spending time playing with my hair and make-up. The result of curling my hair and swiping on a little pink lipstick.

5. Holy deliciousness! It's the perfect summer drink: fizzy, light, and refreshing. After spending all day in the sun, I made this. SO GOOD.

6. I don't even drink Pepsi, but when I saw these limited-edition straws from Jonathan Adler at Target, I had to have them! So cute.

7. Homemade apple cinnamon pancakes garnished with sliced apple. Yum!

8. The boyfriend and I took a trip to Great Falls, Virginia last weekend. What a gorgeous view! We had fun climbing the trails and getting in a good work out.

9. Funfetti cupcakes for Fathers Day. And they're pink, I know. Guess who decorated?

10. One of the few photos I have with my dad as a little kid (he was always behind the camera)! Happy belated fathers day! Pin It

Summer Staples

Dress: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Steve Madden
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Bag: Coach

This is the first summer in four years that I'm not working at Target (such a blessing). So, every morning I am faced with the daunting task of what to wear. Before, my choice was limited to either a red polo or t-shirt and khaki capris or pants. Fun fun.

Anyway, this summer it's completely different! Everyday I'm never really sure what I'm doing, but for the most part it involves applying for jobs (i.e. I usually bum around in sweats). When I'm not doing that though, I have an infinite number of options as to what I'm wearing! However, I've already created a typical summer uniform : colorful sundress, aviators, gladiators, and slouchy brown leather bag. It's perfect for just about any occasion, and it's so simple to put together.

Fiji and Just Crown Me Already

Without a doubt, this has got to be one of my favorite manicures in a long time. How could it not be? It combines two of my favorite things: pink and glitter. Overall, the combination couldn't be more perfect! It's so feminine and pretty, and attracts just the right amount of sparkle for my preference.

For this manicure, I used Essie's "Fiji," which I had never used before. If you're familiar with Essie polishes, this one is basically the same. I found that it easily covered my nails, and I had no issues with chipping until almost a week later. For my ring finger, I used OPI's "Just Crown Me Already," from the Ms. Universe collection. In just two coats, you get full glittery coverage! However, it tends to flake off easily, which sucks. But when you try to remove it with nail polish remover, it's near impossible. Such a weird little conundrum. Otherwise, I would say it's perfect!

Easy, breezy, beautiful.

Dress: Lilly Puliter
Shoes: Steve Madden
Bag: Coach
Necklace: Vintage

Every time I wear this dress, I feel compelled to wear it a different way. I always want to throw a sweater or t-shirt over it, cinch it with a skinny belt, or pair it with a blazer. However, whenever I try to cover this dress up in any way, it just looks awful! One of these days I'll learn, I swear. With some things in life, simple really is better (or the best).

So, just like every time I have worn this dress, I added a simple pair of sandals, my vintage leather bag, and this crystal necklace that I stole out of my grandma's jewelry box forever ago. I know it's nothing new or super exciting, but it is what I wore today!

The thing about phone interviews...

Shirt: Ralph Lauren
Shorts: J. Crew
Shoes: Sperry
Earrings: Nordstrom Rack
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Bag: Coach

Here's the thing about phone interviews. Whenever I have one, I feel like I can just wear whatever I want: sweatpants, old t-shirts, whatever. However, that's really not appropriate. Although your interviewer can't see you, getting a little dressed up will put you in the right state of mind that will set the tone for your phone call. I know many people think this isn't important. But trust me, it helps.

I decided for my phone interview today to go for a semi-profession/casual look. I didn't want to get all dressed up (since I wasn't doing anything other than going to the eye doctor today), but I did want to maintain some level of professionalism for my interview. So, I decided on these coral colored shorts and a yellow and white striped button-down. It was the perfect let's hope I get the job!

Everybody Everywhere: Neon

Shirt: Juicy Couture
Skirt: Ralph Lauren
Shoes: Sperry
Necklace: Erickson Beamon for Target
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Bag: Coach

Neon has been seen on the runways for several seasons now. Yet, it wasn't until this year that I purchased my first neon piece (neon pink, to be exact). And although I still don't have a huge collection of vibrant highlighter bright clothing, I am beginning to learn how to incorporate the sometimes intimidating shade into my preppy wardrobe.

Today, I took this neon pink shirt (actually intended to be worn to bed), and paired it with an understated navy blue skirt. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE color. However, I still think that going over-board on neon is a bit too much for my taste. So, I like to pair it with a more neutral color, to balance out the amount of hues. Plus, I love the combination of pink and navy blue. It's such a super preppy pairing.

To finish off my preppy ensemble, I grabbed my versatile brown leather shoulder bag and beige sperrys. In addition, I added this multi-stranded necklace, which pulls the whole look together.

How do you like to wear neon?

Lilly = Epitome of Summer

Dress: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Kate Spade
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson

On Saturday I went to one of my high school friends graduation parties. For once, I practically had a legitimate reason to dress-up (even though I was pretty sure everyone else was going to be dressed pretty casual).

For the special occasion I decided on this aqua and coral dress that I bought back in April while shopping for my graduation dress. True story - I actually planned on wearing this to my graduation if I hadn't found another dress that I liked more! Anyway, I really like how summery this dress looks. The colors are super bright and fun and the cut is simple and timeless. Overall, the perfect summer dress for a graduation party.

Casual Friday

Tank (stolen from my mom): Ann Taylor
Shorts: Hollister
Sandals: Steve Madden
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Bag: Coach
Belt: Gap

Woo-hoo! Today is Friday, which means it's time for the weekend! Even though I am currently unemployed (hopefully this won't last  for too long..), spending all of my week looking for a job is a full-time job! This week alone, I've applied for almost 30 jobs. It's kind of exhausting. But I know I'm not the only one in this situation.

Anyway, enough complaining. To kick start the weekend, I went out to lunch with my boss and a bunch of people that I interned with at the station. I knew we were going to Hooters (we're a classy bunch, right?) so I definitely wanted to keep things casual. This hand-me-down that I stole from my mom was perfect for the occasion! Paired with some simple sandals and classic white shorts, I thought this was the perfect summer look.

Cloud and Rainbow Connection

Revlon's "Cloud," is one of my favorite nail polish colors of all time. When I first bought it, I didn't really think much of it; just another pretty bottle of polish to add to my ever-expanding collection. However, after the first time I used it, I fell in love. The light purple is a beautiful shade, and it has a smooth and streak-free application.

Wearing a color on it's own can get boring though, so I constantly try and think of new ways to jazz up a plain manicure. One of the easiest ways to do that it is by making a play on the traditional french mani. However, instead of painting a white strip, I went with a bottle of colorful glitter (OPI's "Rainbow Connection" to be specific). The best part about using glitter is that it's hard to see any mistakes! As long as you  use glitter with a clear base, and evenly distribute the glitter across your nail, it's pretty fail-proof!

DIY: Glitter Keys

After seeing this pin and this pin on Pinterest with pretty keys, I knew I had to make some of my own! I mean, how often do I find a craft on Pinterest that I can do with the supplies I have on hand, in a short amount of time, and easily? The answer: not too often. So, when I saw these pins and remembered I had some old keys lying around, I got to work!

1. Find some old keys!

2. Add a small strip of tape right under the tops so you have a clean line. I would recommend painters tape, but scotch was all I had on hand.

 3. Gather all necessary supplies, aka nail polish and glitter.

4. Paint three coats of nail polish. (If you're OCD like me, make sure to get the sides of the keys! I just made sure I had one coat so the silver wasn't completely obvious.)After the third layer of nail polish, sprinkle on enough glitter to cover the surface. Shake off loose and excess glitter.

5. Wait about an hour, or until completely dry. Repeat on the other side.

6. When both sides are completely dry, remove tape, and tap off any extra glitter.

And that's it! Just the way I like my craft projects: simple. When you're finished, you'll have something like this:

I bet you guys are wondering what nail polish and glitter I used. Here's the list:

(I'm using the last photo for reference.)
Key 1 (lavender polish with lavender glitter): Revlon "Cloud" and Diamond Pastel Lavender-ultra fine glitter.
Key 2 (rainbow glitter): OPI "Rainbow Connection" and Deborah Lippmann "Happy Birthday" nail polish.
Key 3 (neon pink polish and glitter): Essie "Pink Parka" and Neon Electric Pink Glitter.
Key 4 (light pink with white glitter): Essie "Van D'Go" and Diamond Pastel Pink-ultra fine glitter.
Key 5 (purple with dark purple glitter): Essie "Sexy Divide" and Metallic Purple glitter.
