Organizing Your Hair and Beauty Supplies

If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you have probably picked up a couple of things.

1. I am obsessively organized. Some people call that OCD.

2. I LOVE pretty packaging. If something comes packaged in a really nice way, I tend to keep it.

3. I'm relatively a hoarder. But I'm an organized hoarder. That's probably an oxymoron.

Anyway, in light of all of my unique characteristics, I wanted to write a blog post that briefly touches on all of these topics. Today, I'm going to talk about how I organize my beauty supplies.

Like I mentioned earlier, I can't resist beautiful packaging. So whenever I buy a cosmetic product, a piece of jewelry, or anything that comes in packaging that I can't resist - I keep it! For the most part, all of this beautiful packaging sits in one of my cabinets until I find the perfect use for it. Hopefully this post will give you some inspiration on cheap and easy ways to organize, without making a trip to the container store.

At one point, this container was used to hold cookies and cream flavored malt balls! YUM! I think I got this for Christmas one year. Anyway, I saved the container, and recently discovered it is the perfect size for all of my hair clips! So much cuter than a traditional cup.

At one point, this was a salsa jar! However, I made it more appropriate for comb storage by removing the label, and layering yellow and pink tissue paper over it. With this container, I can easily see all of my combs, and I never lose them!

Definitely not the most beautiful of all my packaging, but this was once used as a chocolate box. I guess it kind of has a little sentimental value, because it was given to me when I completed my first internship. Anyway, now the box is perfect for bobby pins.

When I first received this container, it had my Easter candy in it! Now, I use it to hold all of my hair ties.

Originally, this little container held the cutest Lilly Pulitzer pen! I found this was the perfect way to store all my make-up brushes. Although this probably wouldn't be enough space for most people, it's just right for my small stash.

At one point, this was a box for a Tommy Hilfiger watch. Now, it holds all of my cotton swabs! This box was too cute to get rid of.

This has got to be my best storage idea yet! Just last week, my mom got an entire new bedding set from Kate Spade (swoon). Anyway, when I saw the containers the bedding came in, I knew I was keeping all of it! Just a couple of days later, I realized that the package that held  the sheets was perfect for all of my rollers! This would be a great container to use for travelling as well.

Do you guys have any unique ideas for beauty product storage?

Doughnut Muffins

I've been on a Pinterest roll recently! In the last week or so, I've made four of the recipes that I pinned to my cooking board. Pretty impressive!

Today, I tried out these doughnut muffins. Although I don't know if I would agree if calling them "doughnut" like, they were still very tasty. However, I think the best part about this recipe was just how easy it was to make! I think it took a grand total of about 35-40 minutes, and that includes mixing and baking. Plus, it only dirtied three or four dishes! I hate recipes that leave me with so many pots and pans to clean at the end. So this was a winner in that respect.

I found the recipe here.
Makes nine muffins.

Here's what you'll need:
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil.
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cups of flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

For the coating:
extra fine sugar
melted butter

Here's how you make them:

1. Lightly grease a muffin pan with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, beat together the sugar and the egg. When these are combined, add vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla, thoroughly combining.

3. In a separate bowl, combing all dry ingredients. When these are mixed, add the liquid mixture.

4. Fill muffin cups until they are 3/4 of the way full, and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes.

5. About 5-10 minutes after the muffins come out of the oven (while they're still warm) lightly coat them with the melted butted. Then, cover the donuts with your cinnamon and sugar mixture in a bowl.

Interview Swag pt.2

Cardigan: Lilly Pulitzer
Dress: Nanette Lepore
Glasses: Kate Spade
Necklace: Lauren Ralph Lauren
Shoes: Coach
This week, I've been overwhelmed with interviews - I've had three! I'm not complaining, believe me. This is what I've been waiting for all summer! Thankfully, of my three interviews this week, only one of them was in-person, so I only needed to think of one perfect, pulled-together ensemble. Of course, of all of my interviews, this was the position I want the most. Cross your fingers for me!

For this interview in particular, it was four hours long! I kid you not, this was the longest interview of my entire life. Not only did I meet at least 12 people, I had to give a 10-minute presentation, and take a tour of the facilities. Can you now understand why my outfit had to be just right?

Thankfully, I think the entire interview (yes, all four hours of it), went extremely well. I'm supposed to know by the beginning of next week at the earliest, and by the end of next week at the latest.

But onto my outfit! I am happy to report that the weather was just absolutely perfect for my big day! A cloudless, sunny, 85 degree day. So, I decided to wear my bright and colorful floral printed dress to reflect my mood. However, I thought some of the buildings might be cold, so I brought along the lightweight cardigan just in case. I finished off my polished look with my favorite necklace of the moment, and my comfiest pair of heels.

Colors of Summer

Dress: Ralph Lauren Rugby
Belt: off a dress from a thrift store
Necklace: Lauren Ralph Lauren
Shoes: Steve Madden
Glasses: Kate Spade
Bag: Coach

At 12:00 p.m., I had literally just stepped out of the shower. Five minutes later, my aunt calls me asking if I want to meet her for lunch since she is in the area. She wants to meet at 12:45, and I know I will need at least 15 minutes to get there on time. So, that left me exactly 30 minutes to transform myself from a sopping mess to presentable human being. Challenge accepted.

Thankfully, now that I have such short hair, I was able to completely style my hair in 15 minutes flat! I never would have been able to do that before (unless you consider a wet bun/ponytail style). Now, all I had left to do was put together a cute and summery outfit. I decided to wear two of my favorite summer colors: coral and turquoise. It seems like such an odd combination, but the cool blue shade is a perfect complement for the warm coral. To finish off my look, I grabbed my brown leather handbag and gladiator sandals; neutral pieces that will tie any look together.

Expensive Taste

If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you may realize I have a problem. We'll call it expensive taste.

I don't know how long I've had this problem. It's just always been apart of me. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and that couldn't be more true in this case (my mom is the exact same way). Example: my favorite dish on the menu always seems to be the most expensive.

However, what happens when you have expensive taste, but aren't always willing to pay that price? Well, sometimes you suck it up, and hope it doesn't completely empty your wallet. For the most part though, you wait forever until the item goes on sale or find a coupon.

Getting to the point of my story. Of course, my problem applies to my hair products. I'm a fan of Bumble and Bumble shampoo and conditioner, as seen below. I love how they smell, and they keep my color bright and vibrant! Because I dye my hair so frequently, I need products that ensure my color lasts.

Don't even get me started on how much this stuff is. I justify it by the fact that these two bottles will last me about two years (seriously)! If you actually use the right amount of product (no more than a quarter), I assure you they will last that long. Plus, my stylist always gives me 25 percent off styling products because she likes me.

Anyway, so this weekend I went in for my haircut appointment, and I knew that I needed to buy new shampoo and conditioner. Although there was still a little bit left in my old bottles, I knew it wasn't going to last much longer. However, did that mean I would let a single drop of this formula go to waste? Absolutely not! So, I decided to make a little craft to store the remaining shampoo and conditioner.

Here's what you'll need

-near empty bottle of your favorite products
-letter stickers
-waterproof paint
-empty travel containers
-painters tape

1. First, I took one of my plastic containers and carefully placed the alphabet stickers in a neat line. I also used some of the painters tape to mark off what I wanted to be painted.

2. Begin painting! I tried to let each coat dry a little bit before painting the next layer, but I'm impatient. I think I ended up doing three coats for each bottle.

3. Wait for the bottles to dry about 90 percent, then carefully peel off stickers and tape.

4. When bottles are completely dry, fill them with your favorite products. (It took a lot of strength to get the last of my conditioner out)!

And that's it! It's a pretty easy project. I'm excited that for once I will have toiletries that are my favorite products! Usually, I just use whatever is in the hotel, or buying something travel -sized from Target. Now, I get little versions of my favorite beauty products! Pin It

Instagram Catch Up

As usual, I'm behind on my Instagram posts. I'm not quite sure how that always manages to happen, but it does. Hey, at least they are getting done, right? Better late than never. Also, has anyone noticed that all my Instagram photos are almost always of food/drinks? I need to get better at taking some live action shots.

P.S - Follow me on Instagram (heytherekatrina) and Twitter to stay up-to-date with me!

1. I'm pretty sure ALL Kate Spade packaging is adorable. My new glasses case was no exception.

2. My new glasses! Completely different from my last pair, but I love them!

3. Strawberries, cream, chocolate, and pie crust. I can't think of more perfect dessert.

4. I am a good cupcake decorator.

5. Why does everyone hate Necco wafers so much?! I LOVE  them. I actually love a lot of the vintage candies. Also, Essie's Aruba Blue, one of my favorite nail polishes.

6. Margaritas with sugar rims.

7. Limited edition KEY LIME Ben and Jerry's? Oh I had to try this! I love anything key lime, so I knew this would be perfect!

8. Bucket list: trying just about every froyo place out there. So far, I can cross off Yogi Castle, Tutti Frutti, and now Sweet Frog! In case anyone was curious, I got key lime (of course). Paired with graham cracker topping and marshmallow sauce, it was just like key lime pie!

9. I talk about how I am OCD all the time. Moments like this, prove it.

10. I hate rainy days. The only thing good about them is pulling out my bubblegum pink Hunters.

11. My t-shirt quilt! I spent the last four years of my college career collection every free shirt that I could. After graduation, I had them all sent here. Two weeks later, I was sent one of the coolest blankets in the world. I couldn't be happier with out it turned out.

12. I saw this while cleaning my Grandma's this week. Would I agree? I'm not sure.

And last but no least...

13. This is a view of the floor after my last hair cut. So much on the floor! I was freaked out, and wasn't sure if I was going to like what I saw in the end, but I did! Stay tuned to see my new look! Pin It

Shades of Pink

Top: I.N.C
Shorts J. Crew
Shoes: Steve Madden
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Bag: Coach
Bracelet: vintage

The heat index today was 105 degrees. Let me just clarify that. One hundred and five degrees. Holy hell.

For once, I was actually going out somewhere! So, I knew I wanted to get all pretty, even though it was hot and humid out. And of course, the minute I stepped outside I could feel my make-up begin to melt, and my hair deflate. Le sigh.

Despite that, I still love this look! Whenever I am going out, I usually like to wear a dress. However, I knew I would just be too uncomfortable with this extreme weather. A sleeveless top and short-shorts were the perfect solution! I still feel dressy, even though I'm just wearing a simple pair of cotton shorts. Plus, I love the combination of the two different pinks. Sometimes I feel like I have to match perfectly, and this proves that doesn't always have to be the case!

Glitter Clock DIY

When I saw this clock on one of my favorite blogs, I knew I had to have my own! It looked very simple, and it was just so cute! Although in the original post the clock was intended to help teach little kids to sleep in, I made mine knowing that wouldn't be an issue. So I glittered all the numbers!

Here's what you'll need:
-cheap clock (something you can remove the plastic cover from - I would recommend Target)
-modge podge
-paint brush

1. Turn clock over and separate the two pieces.

So now you have something that looks like this...

2. Using a paint brush and the modge podge, lightly paint modge podge over each number. Liberally apply glitter all over, making sure there are no bare spots. Repeat until all numbers have been covered.

3. Wait at least an hour for the glitter and modge podge to dry, then get to work removing any excess glitter! After I did each number, I poured most of the remaining glitter into a bowl. When I was finished, I shook off my clock outside (which ended up with me getting glitter everywhere). However, there was still glitter! So I took my hairdryer to it, which didn't really work. In the end, I got most of the glitter off by using a clean paint brush, and a wet paper towel.

4. Screw the two pieces back together. Finally, you'll have something like this...

I love how this project turned out! It was super easy, and the only thing I had to go out and buy was the clock, so it was pretty cheap too. And truthfully, it could't have come at a better time (ha)! Ever since I have been home from school, I hated not having a clock to easily look at all the time. A couple of years ago, I got rid of the clock radio that I had previously had that showed the time. Of course, I always have my cell phone and laptop, but I think I was so used to being at school and easily being able to find a clock, I had to put one on my wall.

If anyone else decides to make one, let me know how it turns out!

What's red all over? Me!

Tank: Neiman Marcus Last Call
Pants: J. Crew
Necklace: Erickson Beamon for Target
Shoes: Steve Madden

For once, the weather this weekend wasn't completely terrible, so I had the chance to pull out my minnie pants! I never really thought I would ever wear them in the middle of July, but when I put them next to my white tank, it just seemed perfect.

Unfortunately, the best part of my outfit is the back of this tank! It has a sparkly t-strap covered with little beads that go about midway down my back. Of course, I forgot to take a picture! Next time, I promise. I mean, the back was the whole reason I bought this top!

Pretty in Pink

Dress: Kate Spade
Necklace: Kate Spade
Purse: Juicy Couture
Shoes: Nine West

Last night, I went and saw Legally Blonde (the musical) with my mom and some of her friends from work at a local dinner theater. We all decided to wear pink for the occasion in honor of Elle Woods, and ended up having the best time!

Of course, this being me, I was not going to be satisfied with just a pink t-shirt and jeans. No, if I'm going to wear pink - I'm going to go all out! I decided on my striped Kate Spade dress, which couldn't have been more perfect for the show. It's pink, it has a huge bow, and it's just so cute! I added some more pink with a light pink leather purse, and a chunky magenta necklace. For the shoes, I decided to keep it simple with a strappy pair of gold heels. I think Elle would have been proud! Pin It

Interview Swag

Dress: Calvin Klein
Belt (came with dress): Calvin Klein
Bag Longchamp
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Shoes: Coach
Earrings: gift

I have been waiting for a long time to wear this dress. I was hoping to wear it once I started at a new job, but I just got too impatient! So, I figured I would wear it for an interview; the next best thing. I think the interview went really well (thankfully), so hopefully I will be wearing this to work soon!

If you watched my summer haul, you'll remember me talking about the deal I got on this dress (original price was $144, and I found it for $19 in the clearance section for Nordstrom Rack). Considering that deal, I actually LOVE the belt that came with this dress. Usually, I find belts that come with jeans or dresses are super cheap. However, I think this sparkly belt really enhances this pale pink ruffled dress, without looking like it was cheaply made. For finishing touches, I added some sparkly earrings, and gray heels.

Now all that's left to do is cross my fingers, and hope for the best!

Beat the Heat

Dress: Nanette Lepore
Necklace: Lauren Ralph Lauren
Bag Coach
Shoes: Steve Madden
With temperatures reaching somewhere in the 100s this weekend, it's important that I stick to wearing light colors, and as little to no clothing as possible. So a strapless dress and gladiator sandals it is! I found this dress buried in the back of my closet this weekend, and I'm so glad that I did! It's so fun and different, and was the perfect thing to wear to a local production of Hairspray. Hope everyone is staying cool!
