Gray Feeling

Shirt: Victoria's Secret
Scarf: Target
Pants: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Shoes: Minnetonka

Just this week, I started reading 50 Shades of Grey. I know, I know, I know. As with most, things I am either way ahead of the trend, or finally catching onto something well after its heyday is over. This would be one of the latter cases. When I initially heard all the hype about the book, I wasn't sure I would like it, which is why I had passed it over. However, with relentless  persuasion from my friends and boyfriend, I have found myself reading the first book of the trilogy.

Anyway, the title inspired me to put together this neutral toned ensemble. As you may already know, I prefer to fill my wardrobe with bright and colorful pieces, and mix and match accordingly. On occasion though, I end up pulling a bunch of basic vanilla pieces out of my closet, and loving how it turns out. While this isn't one of my favorites looks, it's fun to do something a little different from my normal.

Game Day

Sweater: Tommy Bahama
Camisole: Calvin Klein
Glasses: Kate Spade
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Bag: Longchamp
Shoes: Maria Sharapova for Cole Haan

Last weekend was absolutely perfect. I got to spend a lot of time with my boyfriend, heading up to our alma mater to see one of my best friends in a play, doing some shopping, and seeing a basketball game at my boyfriend's grad school.

I wanted to get kind of dressed up for the game, even though I figured no one else really would be. Hey, when you're around kids all day, you want to wear the nice clothes you have whenever you can! I started with this cream colored sequined sweater I got while doing some birthday shopping with my Dad. I haven't had a chance to wear it yet, and I'm happy I finally had an opportunity to do so. Seeing as it's pretty lightweight it's not the best option for freezing cold weather, but it was good enough for a relatively mild winter day.

I paired it with my favorite pants at the moment. I originally considered just going with dark skinny jeans and
my brown leather riding boots, but both of those choices just felt too heavy with this delicate sweater. Finally, I finished off with my gold glittered flats and my new signature, a crimson lip. I used to feel so self-conscious whenever I wore red lipstick, but now I wear it all the time without a care. Like they said in Hairspray, "a little touch of lipstick never hurt no one!"

A week in Instagram

Here's what the past week or so has looked like through Instagram. Enjoy!

P.S - Keep up-to-date with me by following my Instagram (heytherekatrina) and Twitter!

1. Candy hearts are one of my biggest weaknesses.

2. Faschnaut day is a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition held on the same day as Fat Tuesday. Faschnaut means doughnut in German, so it basically means go eat a doughnut. Shout outs to my boyfriend and a college friend for letting me in on this awesome day!

3. Celebrating Valentine's day by treating myself to some fabulous studded flats.

4. I know I am BEYOND behind, but I am finally reading the Harry Potter series. I just finished the third book in the series, and I loved it!

5. A colorful display of fresh flowers.

6. Finishing off the remainder of my treats from Valentine's day.

7. Evening essentials: Coach poppy perfume and Illamasqua lipstick in Box.

8. Spending the afternoon with my boyfriend at a basketball game at his grad school.

9. Our view at the game from the student section. Pin It

Office Hours

Shirt: Ralph Lauren
Camisole: Calvin Klein
Skirt: Kate Spade
Shoes: Lucky Brand
Boot Toppers: Nine West

Currently, I'm only working one day a week - Friday. The rest of my week is reserved for nannying, but Friday is for my internship! I work in the marketing department for a small lifestyle magazine in northern Virginia, and I love it. I am getting so much experience, and am delighted to have a break from being with kids all day. Plus, it gives me an opportunity to dress up! The office is pretty casual (especially considering it's Friday), but I love to break out my skirts and button-downs and feel like adult again.

Even though it was pretty chilly, I decided to bare a little leg in my new navy pencil skirt. Once I decided on that piece, I knew I wanted the rest of my outfit to preppy. So, I pulled out this classic white button down, brown leather boots, and these chunky boot toppers. Even though almost everyone else in the office was wearing jeans, I just feel so much more put together in a classic skirt.

Shirt: Gap
Scarf: Lilly Pulitzer
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Minnetonka

Spring is just around the corner, although it certainly doesn't feel like it! I wake up almost every morning to dreary gray skies, and a chance of snow, rain, or sleet. However, I know that in the blink of an eye the nights will get longer, the flowers will bloom, and the sun will be out in the morning. Until that day, I'm working on brightening up my daily ensembles with pastels.

This lilac long-sleeved tee from Gap is one of my favorites. Of course, I realized too late that I wanted one in every color. I've stopped in just about every Gap that I've come across, and none have this basic tee! Anything that I've seen in stores that looks similar isn't made with the same material, or it doesn't have the crew cut neckline. So, if anyone sees this style online - please let me know!

Instead of pairing my tee with skinny jeans, I pulled out my beloved khakis. After four years working at Target and as a college tour guide, I never thought that I would wear them ever again. However, I was proven wrong. These pants are just too versatile to give up! In addition to being perfect for casual office wear, I love how they make pale colored tops stand out.

Hunters and Stripes

Top: J. Crew
Pants: Michael Kors
Shoes: Hunters
Scarf: Calvin Klein

Since temporarily moving in with my boyfriend, I've been working with a very limited wardrobe. In addition to most of my clothing not being nanny appropriate, I only brought with me about an eighth of what I actually own. For those two reasons alone, I've been having an increasingly difficult time choosing what I'll wear on a regular basis.

Today though, was a no-brainer. As soon as I looked out the window and saw that it was sleeting, I knew wearing my Hunters was a necessity. With that in mind, I was easily able to build the rest of my outfit. Breton stripes paired with dark skinny jeans are timeless classics, and a thick knit scarf was added for extra warmth.

Denim on Denim

Top: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Pants: Eileen Fisher
Scarf: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Shoes: Minnetonka

Denim on denim. About 10 years ago, that phrase may have only conjured an image of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears at the American Music Awards. Thankfully, that's all changed with the introduction of chambray. Originally, I wasn't a fan. I felt like it was one of those fashion trends that fashion bloggers could pull off, and it just wasn't for me. But when I tried on this button-up at the Delia*s warehouse sale about a year and a half ago, I fell in love with chambray.

This is actually the first time I've worn a blue denim on denim look. Since I've bought this shirt, I have worn it countless times. I can see why it's became so popular - it's one of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe. Whether it is worn with cargo skinnies, a maxi skirt, or chino shorts, it always gives off the perfect casual chic vibe. For whatever reason, wearing it with blue denim was a daunting challenge. Finally, I took the plunge. Just like monochromatic color scenes, I think it makes all difference when the shades are opposite. Even though I am just nannying, if I run around in yoga pants and a college tee, I feel unproductive and lazy. This ensemble is pulled together, simple, and comfortable. With the addition of my moccasins and infinity scarf, I was out the door!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Shirt: Ralph Lauren
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Betsey Johnson

Happy Valentine's Day! Love it or hate it, today is a day to celebrate love. Whether that's a bond shared between a mother and child, two childhood friends, or a husband and a wife, today is an excellent opportunity to show those who you love just how much you care.

I went for a simple look today. Although I wanted to do something more colorful and bright, my wardrobe is relatively limited at the moment. I started with my favorite jeans that I just cannot get enough of! I paired them with a simple oxford button down, and nude studded flats. It's a easy enough ensemble, but definitely a step up from my daily outfits.

I hope everyone has a special day! Even if you're single, today is prime time to enjoy Ben and Jerry's, chocolate, and your favorite romantic comedy.

NYC Blizzard

Ear Muffs: Kate Spade
Coat: Michael Kors
Sweater: C. Wonder
Pants: Michael Kors
Bag: Longchamp
Boot Toppers: Nine West
Shoes: Hunters
Gloves: gift

About two months ago, my boyfriend started planning a weekend getaway for us in New York City. I was ecstatic! I've been itching to get away for some time now, and there's nothing like a trip to the big apple to relieve the stresses of a routine day-to-day life. All I had to do was choose the weekend, and he took care of the rest! I was more than happy to let someone else take care of all the planning.

So when I heard about the likelihood of a blizzard, I was devastated. My overprotective parents immediately suggested that we cancel our trip for another weekend, but my boyfriend and I could not be swayed. In the end, our decision was made for us when Amtrak did not cancel our train. We knew it was going to be an adventure (and freezing), but we were excited.

Thankfully, the estimates ended up being much worse than the actual snowfall. By the time we arrived in the city, the snow had long since stopped, and the sun was beginning to peak out from behind the gray skies. Still, I seriously bundled up for our trip. I've mentioned many times that I almost always choose fashion over comfort, but this was not one of those times. It was 20 ~ degrees, there was about a half a foot of snow on the ground, and wind was blowing! Comfort and practical choices beat out my more stylish options.

I have to say, I probably would not have survived this weekend without my Hunters and my matching "baby it's cold outside" earmuffs and scarf (not seen) from Kate Spade. While most tourists had to figure out the best way to avoid puddles, I gleefully stomped in them. No cold feet for me!

Overall, we had a great weekend. Saturday, we took advantage of the snow and strolled around Central Park, watching kids sled down hills and dogs play in the snow. Later that afternoon, we slipped into the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I enjoyed checking out a new photography exhibit and chatting with fellow tourists looking for an escape from the cold. Then there was the food. Lots, and lots of food. I never left a restaurant without cleaning my plate!

After an early breakfast on Sunday, we headed out to go shopping. In some sort of a miracle, I came home empty handed! I tried on several things, but I wasn't convinced on anything. Too tight, too short, too big, too expensive. I'll never buy anything that I don't love, and there was nothing that I loved enough to buy (other than cupcakes) this trip.

Before I knew it, we were headed home again. It was a short trip, but it couldn't have come at a better time. I am already looking forward to our next trip in the warmer months!

A week in Instagram

I've had an extremely busy week, but it has been wonderful. Here's what it looked like through Instagram.

P.S. - Follow me on Instagram (heytherekatrina) and Twitter!

1. I'm nannying for a new family, and I love their puppy! Here she is, soaking up the sun.

2. For once, I was having a healthy dessert. Fresh strawberries with a little sugar, and healthy serving of orange juice.

3. A refreshing pop of color at a local church.

4. As an early Valentine's day gift, my boyfriend took me NYC! Of course, we had to stop at the Met. I couldn't get enough of this view.

5. Bundling up to face the cold streets of the city before heading out for dinner and drinks.

6. I know it's touristy, but I love wondering around in the giant Toys-R-Us in Times Square. It makes me feel like a kid again!

7. Relaxing on the train ride home with a little light reading on my Kindle and a lemon-filled Krispy Kreme.

8. Typical Instagram sunset shot. #sorrynotsorry

Think Pink!

Top: Juicy Couture
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Scarf: Target
Shoes: Minnetonka

I am obsessed with these pants. I wore them just last week, the week before that, and again today! Normally, I try to avoid wearing the same thing multiple times throughout the week (other than basic blue jeans), but I these pants are just too versatile! Plus, with Valentine's day just around the corner, these pants feel more appropriate than ever.

I couldn't resist pairing these coral colored jeans with a neon pink tee. I've always loved analogous color schemes (colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel), and this has to be one of my favorite pairings to date. I finished off with some bright lipstick, a soft scarf, and my worn-in moccasins.

Sunrise Fruit Shake

I am one of those rare who people can call themselves a "morning person". I get up extra early so I can sneak in an episode or two of Desperate Housewives, pump myself up in an intense kickboxing class, and then head home to refuel with big breakfast. Almost everyday I eat the exact same thing: cinnamon oatmeal with skim milk, turkey bacon, an apple with peanut butter, and a sunrise shake.

I love fruit! I have a serving with almost every single meal. In the mornings though, I love to start with my sunrise shake. It's juicy, super flavorful, and blends into a beautiful pink shade. And for those of you who aren't morning people, it's super easy to make. Here's what you need:

-8 oz. of orange juice
-1 cup of raspberries
-1 cup of strawberries

After you slice the strawberries, all you have to do is combine everything in the blender. After about 30 seconds, your shake should be the perfect consistency.

Delicious! I like to serve mine in a tall glass with a colorful straw. How simple, right? I can't think of a better way to start my morning.

Oh! Here's a great tip, thanks to Life Hacker. Instead of washing your blender by hand and putting your fingers precariously close to the blades, add some water and a squeeze of dishwashing liquid and hit blend! Rinse it out, and you almost instantly have a clean blender again. Such a simple change that saves time, and is without a doubt much safer.

New Direction

Shirt: American Eagle
Pants: Michael Kors
Shoes: Minnetonka
Scarf: Victoria's Secret

At this point in my life, I have absolutely no direction. Now, if you had told me that nine months ago at my graduation, I honestly can say that I would have passed out. However, I am trying to accept that I am going to have to roll with the punches, and go with the flow (which is truly so unlike me). While just two weeks ago I was miserably making a 70-mile commute everyday to my temp job, I have now found myself nannying and interning again.

It's crazy just how quickly my life can turn around, but it is what it is. I'm working a lot less, but I love what I am doing. I never thought that I would miss taking care of other people's children, but while working my temp job doing customer service, I realized I did. In addition to nannying, I'll be interning with a lifestyle magazine in the northern Virginia area. Honestly, despite the fact that I am scared of all the uncertainties my future holds, I am ready for this new direction.
