Mod About You and Turquoise & Caicos

For this week's manicure, I was inspired by spring! It seems like I've been wearing berry and plum make-up shades for months, so it's exciting to finally break out pastel and tropical colored products again.

In addition to being inspired by spring, I really wanted to do something that would be fun for Easter. I still don't know what I'm wearing to mass tomorrow yet, but I'm sure my new nails will work perfectly! For my ring finger, I used Essie's turquoise & caicos. It's a creamy mint color, with more blue in it than yellow. I think I would like this polish better if it was a lighter shade than green, but it works for its purpose. For the rest of my fingers, I used OPI's mod about you. It's the perfect shade of pale pink with just a touch of lilac. Pin It

Maxi Benefits

Shirt: Delia*s Warehouse Sale
Camisole: Calvin Klein
Skirt (worn as dress): Victoria's Secret
Shoes: Minnetonka
Bag: Longchamp
Belt: Target

I've had the whole week off from nannying, so I've taken some time to kick-back, relax, and shop! Today, I headed out to do some outlet shopping, and was shocked to see just how nice it was outside! The bright sunshine convinced me that it would definitely be warm enough for some spring attire, but I was wrong (as usual).

Regardless, I love this outfit. A couple of years ago, you never would have caught me wearing a maxi skirt. Once I bought this black maxi from James Perse though, that all changed. In addition to being super comfortable, maxi's give any outfit a cool, bohemian chic vibe. However, the best thing about a maxi skirt is that it can be worn as a dress! Cinched with a belt in the middle, a maxi skirt instantly transforms into mid-length casual dress. Because its still so chilly out, I covered up with my favorite chambray shirt, and finished off with a skinny glitter belt and my worn-in moccasins.

A week in Instagram: California

Earlier this month, I spent a week in San Francisco with my family visiting my half-sister, her husband, and their young son. I had an opportunity to see so many great landmarks, sample a lot of delicious food, and relax! Here's what my vacation looked like through Instagram

1. Listening to some old-school JT on my five-hour flight out.

2. Our view right across the street from our hotel.

3. Touring Stanford's campus on a beautiful sunny day.

4. Stanford vs UNLV baseball game with the family!

5. After a short half-hour drive, I couldn't believe just how high up we were!

6. Pier 39 in the early morning before all the tourists arrived.

7. On the ferry on the way to see Alcatraz!

8. After finishing the scenic 17-mile drive, we ended up at the 18th hole of Pebble Beach.

9. My mom and I celebrated the 20th anniversary of our move out to Hawaii with a mai tai. Aloha!

10. Looking out at the Bay Bridge at dusk.

11. While in Monterey, I ran into a candy shop with the most diverse selection of saltwater taffy. I left with a whole bag!

12. On our last night in San Francisco, we caught the view of downtown San Fran from historic Lombard St.

The Ultimate Running Playlist pt.2

In December, I compiled a lengthy list of some of my favorite songs for running. However, now that spring is coming, I decided to put together an updated list with some old favorites and a couple of new ones too. It's definitely an eclectic mix, but I like to mix things up! Let me know if you have any recommendations for my next playlist, and enjoy!

Aruba Blue and Happy Birthday

For the past couple of months, I've only been wearing what I consider "natural" color polishes on my nails. Reds, pinks, and nudes were all fine, but black and other shades of the rainbow were out of the question. This is quite a change for me since previously I would wear just about anything!

With spring just around the corner, I've since had a change of heart. For this week's manicure, I started with Aruba Blue by Essie, which in my opinion is the most dazzling blue polish I have ever seen. For a fun twist, I did a French-manicure style tip with the Happy Birthday glitter by Deborah Lippman. Finally, I finished with Essie's matte finisher instead of my traditional coat of shiny Seche Vite. I love the contrast of the sparkly glitter with the velvety blue polish. This is definitely a change from what I've been doing for a couple of months, but it's a welcome one.

Timeless Pieces

Dress: Diane von Furstenberg
Camisole: Calvin Klein
Shoes: Lauren Ralph Lauren

I know that I've said this at least 10 times now, but I really don't have a lot to work with at my boyfriends apartment. I have several pairs of jeans, a pile or so of worn-in t-shirts, and a couple of my favorite dresses. Because I knew that I wouldn't be getting dressed up more than twice a week, it really wasn't necessary to bring the majority of the things I own.

However, I knew I would probably be going on several interviews while I was down here. So, it was crucial that I brought dresses with me that I really loved, as well as being versatile. This signature wrap dress was one of the few that made the cut. Wrap dresses are flattering on everyone - they instantly create an hourglass figure, and make sure everything stays covered. Paired with the perfect pair of black leather stilettos and my Longchamp bag (not seen), I was interview-ready in no time flat!

A Cause for Celebration

Shirt: Ralph Lauren
Pants: Mavi
Belt: Gap
Shoes: Maria Sharapova for Cole Haan

When I woke up to sunshine this morning, I couldn't believe my eyes! For a moment, I was positive that I was back in California, but I quickly realized that I was back where I belonged in Virginia. Still, just seeing the sun was cause for celebration (it's the little things, right?). For the occasion, I pulled out my gold glittered flats, which always sparkle in the sun.

From there, I kept the rest of my outfit super simple. As much as I would love to get all dolled up, it's just not practical to my nanny lifestyle.

Hippie Juice

A couple of months ago, I was invited to a "Pinterest Party". Basically, the whole point of the party was to actually try some of the recipes that my friends and I had pinned. Not only was it exciting to cross off a pin from one of my boards, I got to try out a ton of food that I probably would not have otherwise.

My responsibility was alcohol (I was in the mood to do something super simple), so I decided on this "recipe" for hippie juice. I've seen it pinned so many times, and I have always wanted to try it. This party was the perfect occasion! Here's what you'll need:

Makes one full pitcher:
1/3 cup of Triple Sec
1/3 cup of Malibu
1 cup of Smirnoff Strawberry Vodka
1/2 cap of Country Time Strawberry Lemonade Powder

1. Measure half a tops worth of the lemonade powder and add to your pitcher.

2. Measure all the alcohols, and add to the lemonade powder mix.

3. Top off the remainder of the pitcher with about 2 quarts of water (or until the container is filled).

4. Mix well with a wooden spoon until everything is dissolved. Chill and serve.

I found this recipe to be super simple and delicious! It doesn't taste super strong, which means you don't realize as quickly how much you have been drinking. Regardless, I would definitely make this again. The original recipe from Peace, Love, Guacamole also added strawberries, which I just didn't have on hand. Raspberries would be great too!

California Sunshine

Shirt: Gap
Camisole: Calvin Klein
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Necklace: Juicy Couture
Sunglasses: Betsey Johnson
Bag: Longchamp
Shoes: Sperry

After a much needed vacation in San Francisco to visit my half-sister, I'm finally home! While it was great to explore new sites, spend time with family, and soak up the sun, there really is no place like home. However, I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the weather already - almost everyday I woke up to clear skies and the sun beating down.

As a result, I was finally able to shed my layers and bare some skin for a change. Above, is an outfit I wore while checking out Stanford's stunning campus. Although I saw a lot of people dressed in short-shorts and sun dresses, I'm not quite ready for that kind of transition yet! For now, I am perfectly happy dressing in spring colors and looking appropriate for the season!

California, Here We Come

Family Portrait, 2008 (?)
Family Portrait, 2010

By the time you read this post, I'll be in California! For the next week, my family and I will be hanging out with my half-sister and her son, and enjoying some much needed R&R. Although my parents made a trip out last year, I haven't seen my sister and nephew since the last time they visited us in the fall 2010.

I can't wait to spend the week with my family, bask in the sun, and sample tons of new restaurants!

Shirt: Theory
Camisole: Calvin Klein
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Lauren Ralph Lauren
Belt: Gap

Typically, I get the most satisfaction putting together an outfit that is so quintessentially me. Think bright colors, sequins, glitter, breton stripes - I could go on and on. Other times, I am most pleased conjuring an ensemble that's new and different, even if it's only new to me. However, I can't do that all the time. Most mornings, I groggily stumble out of bed, and stare at the contents of my closet until something finally clicks.

For those days when I find it particularly difficult to choose what to wear, I try to remember KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)! Instead of trying to think of something fresh, I go back to the basics, and work from there. If you couldn't already guess, today was one of those mornings. I started with this pale blue button down, and decided to pair it with dark skinny jeans for a more relaxed look. To keep the rest of my look from being too blah, at the last minute I pulled out my black stilettos. Honestly, I really love what I wore today for the first time in awhile. Just goes to show that simple sometimes is best! Pin It

Winning Combinations, pt. 2

Sweater: Old Navy
Skirt: J. Crew
Shoes: Lucky Brand
Last year, my color was coral. Sometimes it was more of a salmon shade, and other times it verged on tangerine. Regardless of the tone, anything that fell on that color palette was an instant  favorite in my wardrobe.

This year, I think it's less about one particular color being "mine," and more about a dynamic pairing that works, every single time. The certain color combination that I'm thinking of is coral and blue. No matter if it's this ensemble, this one, or today's, it always works for me. I know I've said a lot of this before, so I'll try to keep the rest of this short. Though, if there's one thing I hope you get out of today's post, its that finding something that works for you makes you feel that much better about your appearance. Plus, it makes getting dressed every morning that much easier!

Jewel Tones

Shirt: FCUK
Scarf: Jones New York
Pants: Eileen Fisher
Shoes: Minnetonka

Today was a beautiful, sunny, 50 degree day. Tomorrow, the northern Virginia area is expected to get anywhere between 8-12 inches of heavy snow. This kind of bi-polar behavior is so typical in this region, it's not even funny. Anyway, I figured I would bare my arms for now; I'm definitely going to have to bundle up if I head out tomorrow!

Here's another standard nannying outfit. My fringed scarf and plain t-shirt aren't super fancy, but work perfectly for my day-to-day activities. And on the plus side, I feel more pulled together wearing a basic ensemble like this than just wearing yoga pants and a over-sized hoodie.

Spaghetti with Spinach

Honestly, I have never liked pasta much. I KNOW. While most kids would have a plate of spaghetti and meatballs, all I wanted were some tacos. Recently, things have changed. There are so many delicious things that accompany pasta that I have actually started to enjoy eating this simple starch.

A while back, I found an easy recipe through Pinterest that sparked me to get in the kitchen. It was so good, I thought I would share how it turned out.

Here's what you'll need:

-3 tablespoons of olive oil
-3 teaspoons of minced garlic
-juice of one lemon
-2 handfuls of baby spinach
-2 tablespoons of grated parmesan
-salt and pepper to taste

1. In a skillet, heat olive oil and garlic over medium low heat. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes to gently cook the garlic. Add lemon juice and zest; season with salt and pepper.

2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, and cook pasta according to package directions. Drain pasta, and transfer to a large bowl. Add the spinach and garlic oil, and toss everything together. Bon appetit!
