101 in 1001: March 2014

I'm two months into my 101 in 1001 list, and I've definitely slowed down quite a bit. This month, I only managed to make a dent on a few of the easier things on my list, and accomplished one of the most difficult. Nonetheless, I'm not discouraged. I know some months I won't get much done, and it looks like this is one of them.

I actually made decent progress on reading this month. My quick thoughts on each: The Paris Wife starts slow, but turns out to be pretty good. The Scorch Trials is the sequel to the Maze Runner, so it's a must read if you loved the first book. I had to read The Fault in Our Stars for the hype, and I only thought it was decent. Worth reading I guess, but not the best thing I've ever read.

45. Try five new restaurants. (Crepes-A-Go-Go, T.J. Stones)

46. Write 10 reviews on Yelp. (Crepes-A-Go-Go, Austin Tech, Carlyle, El Azteca, Bubbles)
Oh, I'm getting so close on this one! Adding this to my list has definitely made me a more active Yelp user, and more conscious to check reviews whenever I need to find a service in my areas.

54. Upload old photos to Snapfish from the last two years.
Basically as soon as I graduated college, I stopped uploading my photos to Snapfish. I already back them up on an external hard drive, so no worries about losing my photos. However, I've been meaning to get a bunch of shots printed, and getting my photos uploaded was the first step to making this happen. Hooray for progress!

81. Find a new job.
This is a pretty major accomplishment that I'm so excited about. I really want to go into more detail about it, so I will be dedicating a whole blog post to how I got here eventually. But, it will take me a bit of time to write up (aka longer than the usual 15 minutes), so be on the lookout!

Stripes and Pleats

Shirt: J. Crew
Skirt: Tory Burch
Necklace: Claire*s
Shoes: Jessica Simpson

Is it just me, or did this week absolutely fly by? I woke up on Monday, feeling groggy and exhausted, and all of sudden, it was Friday! No complaints here though; I'm thrilled that it's the weekend. I fully intend to spend  every second relaxing, reading, and exploring with my fiance.

In other unrelated news, I'm just wearing this skirt for the first time - 9 months after I purchased it! Yes, I realize that this is kind of ridiculous. However, when I bought it last summer, it wasn't the right time of the year to wear it. Then when it finally was winter, I wasn't sure how to wear it. I know, that's a no-no purchase when shopping, but I couldn't resist! This original price of this skirt was more than $400 dollars, and I scored it at Nordstrom Rack for $40.

Like this post, I decided to pair my ladylike pleated skirt with a simple striped long-sleeve, and classic pearls. Also, I pulled out my nude heels for the first time in what feels like forever! I pretty much exclusively wear boots all winter, so now that I'm slowly wearing my heels again, I know that I'm getting into a spring state of mind. Pin It

Shades of Green and Pink

Jacket: Tahari
Dress: Calvin Klein
Boots: Lucky Brand
Earrings: Lord and Taylor

I seriously can't believe I almost forgot about this olive jacket just because it has been hanging in my coat closet instead of with the rest of my clothes. It's such a shame, especially because this is the perfect transition to spring piece! Good thing I finally remembered.

Just like last week, I decided to pair it with another pink piece in my wardrobe, a feminine pale pink ruffled (hidden under my jacket) dress. And because my shoes choices are pretty limited in the winter, I wore my well-loved brown leather boots for the umpteenth time. Hopefully, I won't be wearing them much longer!

My Perfect LBD

Blazer: L. K. Bennett
Dress: Diane von Furstenberg
Tights: Betsey Johnson
Shoes: BCBGeneration

I am feeling good today! No special occasions going on here - no meetings, no fancy parties, no, I just wanted to get a little more dressed up than usual just for the hell of it. Yes, even though it snowed and it was well below freezing. I actually woke up at the first alarm at 5:30 a.m., took an extra long shower, and blow dried my hair. Oh, and I'm so glad I did! Gosh, I forget how dedicating just a little extra time to getting dressed in the morning can make such a positive impact on your day.

Can we talk about this dress for just a second? I got it while I was in New York last winter, and this is the first time I'm wearing it and it's making an appearance on the blog! When I knew my time at my old job was coming to an end (I'm going to do a post on this soon, I swear), I stopped caring about what I was wearing to work. I resolved not to wear most of the clothes I got from my trip until I had found a new job. Now, I'm so glad that I did. It has been so much fun to pull out my new clothes again!

As I zipped up this dress, I realized I had completely forgotten how much I loved it. It fits me so well, and the teardrop cut-outs at the collarbone make this dress standout from any traditional little black dress. Of course, I had to keep things office appropriate, so I added my favorite black blazer on top. Though, I'm really looking forward to styling this classic dress in different ways so I can show off the cut-outs!

A week in Instagram

Wow, it has been a while since I've posted my snaps from Instagram! I must get better and taking even a moment to step back and take a photo to capture my memories. With that being said, here's what my world has looked like for the past three weeks or so.

P.S. - Stay up to date with me by following me on Instagram and Twitter!

1. I love it when my Washingtonian and Northern Virginia Magazine come on the same day. Also loving the donut cover.

2. The best things come in Kate Spade packages.

3. At a paint and sip class with a good friend from college for a surprise birthday party.

4. Celebrating five fabulous years with the best fiance.

5. That time I fell on black ice and ripped my jeans. And, I didn't even notice until I got to work. #sadness

6. Who would pay $19.99 for organic nut-free peanut butter? Seriously can't get over this one.

7. Some people celebrate St. Patrick's Day with green beer, I had avocado chicken salad and free green chips and queso from California Tortilla.

8. Sometimes, you just have to pick out all the marshmallow bits from the Lucky Charms.

First day of Spring

Shirt: Ralph Lauren
Skirt: Tommy Hilfiger
Boots: Lucky Brand
Necklace: Charter Club

Yesterday marked the first day of spring, and I couldn't be more excited. Although I know that the weather won't turn around immediately, I know it's finally on its way. As I walked out to my car yesterday morning, I could feel it in the air. The snow has (mostly) melted, the sun was shining brightly, and birds were chirping. Oh spring, I've missed you so much!

Like I said earlier, the weather hasn't changed much, but my mood definitely has! The bright sunshine inspired me to show a little leg, even though it's still pretty chilly. I also decided to try a little pattern mixing with this yellow striped button down. I know once I get hand of it, I'll be able to get so much more out of my wardrobe!

Olive Green and Neon Pink

Jacket: Tahari
Shirt: J. Crew
Pants: J. Brand
Shoes: Vera Wang

I love reading through my favorite blogs before going to bed. It's a great way for me to wind down at the end of the day, and provides an excellent source of inspiration for the next day's outfit, or even for one later on in the week. Last night, I was reading Mackenzie's blog, and found this post about olive green and hot pink. It immediately piqued my interested to put together an outfit with the color combination.

I've always loved a solid green and pink color scheme, although in completely different shades - like lime green or mint, and pale pink or magenta. For whatever reason, I've never thought about these hues together, but it made perfect sense once I read the post! I immediately went into my closet, looking for the perfect pieces to put together my own interpretation of this trend.

My selection for olive colored clothing was limited, but then I remember this belted jacket in my coat closet, and knew it would be just perfect. Next, a tissue soft v-neck tee shirt. I decided on white jeans, instead of traditional blue to really make the rest of the outfit pop, and I'm glad I did. Finally, I slipped on nude ballet flats, although I really wanted to wear cream colored Converse (too bad I don't have any).

Lounge Mentality

Cardigan: Lilly Pulitzer
Shirt: Tory Burch
Pants: Michael Kors
Boots: Lucky Brand
Necklace: Vintage

On Monday, I was so thankful to take a snow day and work from home. I'm the kind of person who can be productive even though I'm wearing my pajamas and lounging on the couch, just as long as I'm not in my bed, I'm good to work!

When I went into work today, I think I was still in the same kind of lounge mentality. I wanted to wear something super comfortable and casual that would require no fuss. This outfit has kind of become my unofficial winter uniform this year. This wrap sweater is the perfect layering piece, and isn't too bulky or warm for my office. A striped long sleeve, skinny jeans, and my favorite leather riding boots finish off this look. I'm so thankful that I work in an atmosphere where I can dress casual when I want to - what a luxury!

Weekend Activities

Dress: Milly
Necklace: Lauren Ralph Lauren
Shoes: C. Wonder

The past couple of weekends, I haven't done much. I ran errands, cleaned, babysat, and hung out at home. And for the most part, I have no problem with that. However, when my weekend activities begin to practically blur into my weekday routine, I get bored. So, I was so excited when I remembered that I was seeing a show with my mom and aunt this weekend. Also, it gave me an excuse to dress up, which I can never turn down.

This dress is one of my favorites, although I don't think it has ever made an appearance on my blog. No better time than the present! I knew this would be the perfect thing to wear to show, plus, it was really nice out (aka about 60 degrees), and I was just dying for a chance to show off my pale legs.

We saw Beaches, based on the movie/book of the same name at Signature Theater. I've seen the movie a couple of times, and always end up bawling at the end. Same thing with the musical. I honestly didn't think the movie could get any better, but it did. However, I found it to be quite a bit funnier, which surprisingly, I didn't mind at all. If you're in the area and can get tickets, I would absolutely recommend that you go!

Spring, and other musings.

Top: Yumi Kim
Pants: J. Brand
Shoes: Vera Wang
Bag: Kate Sapde
Earrings: Lord and Taylor

I can't keep up with this weather anymore. Mother Nature has gone completely out of control! Wednesday, it was balmy 65 degrees outside (practically summer by my standards), and then yesterday, it dropped to a low of 15 degrees. What?! At least when I know it's going to be freezing out for days, I have a couple of uniforms that I can gravitate to when I don't know what to wear. But when the weather is all over the place like it has been recently? Definitely doesn't make getting dressed any easier.

This morning, I was staring at this top hanging in my closet, just dying to wear it. I was tentative though, just because it feels like such a spring piece, and I'm not in that state of mind yet. That thought crossed through my mind for about three seconds, and then I just decided I didn't care. I was going to wear something spring-y, and look pretty!

I can't think of anything more spring-like than a crisp pair of white jeans. Now, I have no problems with wearing white after Labor Day. However, that rule doesn't apply to white jeans. I've always strictly reserved them for warmer weather, and love pulling them out after a particularly harsh winter. They always make vibrant colored blouse pop, and stand out from a sea of traditional blue denim.

Finally, I pulled out my new pale pink Kate Spade crossbody bag to finish off my look. I got it as a treat to myself for finding a new job (but more on that much later), and am so excited to finally be using it! I've been searching for the perfect crossbody for about a year now, and I couldn't be happier with the one I finally found. It's the prettiest shade of pink, roomy enough to fit all of my daily essentials, and to top it off, I got it at a great discount. I think it's the perfect finishing touch to today's look.

Pattern Play

Shirt: Tory Burch
Skirt: L.K. Bennett
Shoes: Coach
Necklace: Claire*s

I pinned this photo of one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Jessica from What I Wore, more than two years ago. Yes, you read that right. Two! Normally, I'm the kind of person who pins something, and then I like to take action on it (copy the outfit, cook the recipe, organize the junk drawer, etc.) almost immediately afterward. Somehow though, I completely forgot about this photo. It wasn't until I was going through my board deleting pins that were no longer relevant (am I the only one who does this?) that I stumbled on the photo again.

It was instant inspiration for today's outfit. I'll admit though, I was bit nervous to do some pattern mixing. It's so much easier to just pair together pieces that clearly go together! Other women may it look so effortless, but for me, it's so not.  Thank goodness for the Internet, though! As I looked at myself in the mirror this morning, I was pretty pleased how this pairing turnout. However, I do wish I had taken the extra second to swipe on some red lipstick - I think it really would have pulled together the whole look.

NUE by Shani

Dress: NUE by Shani
Necklace: Kate Spade
Shoes: C. Wonder

I bet you've never heard of NUE by Shani. Honestly, until my trip to NYC last December, I hadn't heard of them either. However, while shopping the clearance racks at Lord and Taylor, I found several of her dresses, and was instantly intrigued. The colors were bold and bright, and the silhouettes were very simple and clean. Why had I never even heard of her? I like to think I'm pretty in the know almost any brand, but this one somehow missed my radar.

Anyway, here's what makes her dresses extra special (in addition to being super cute): they are lined with a compression fabric that acts just like shapewear. With that sewn right into the inside of the dress, you instantly look slim and sleek. I've appropriately named it the fat-sucking dress, and I absolutely love it! I actually bought one other dress from her collection, but it's sleeveless, so I'll be saving that for once it gets a little warmer.

I paired my dress with my favorite C. Wonder pumps, and a fun necklace from Kate Spade. I'm a little dressed up in comparison to the rest of my office, but I don't really care. All that matters is that I feel good! Pin It

Mod About You and Minnie Style

Today's post isn't super special, but I love to keep track of my weekly manicures (when I actually keep up with them). Anyway, I was really drawn to pink this week - probably because I avoided it for the last month, and now I've decided I like it again for the time being.

My base color is "Mod About You," which is pretty pale pink, which a slight hint of lilac. I use it all the time, but even more so in the spring. As usual, I couldn't just paint my nails with a solid color, I always have to do a little something extra to make me happy. In this case, I used my new glitter polish "Minnie Style," also from OPI, which is a mix of red, magenta, and white hexagon-shaped glitter pieces. I love how the combination turned out, but the glitter pieces are a little difficult to apply.

Sweater: Burberry
Pants: J. Crew
Shoes: C. Wonder
Necklace: vintage

Last weekend, I finally got my hair done. I've been seeing the same stylist since my freshman year of college, but unfortunately now that I've moved, it's not as easy to pop in and get my roots touched up. Anyway, now that I finally got my cut and color touched up, I feel so refreshed!

There's nothing like a good visit to the salon to make you feel pretty again. And when I feel pretty in the morning, it makes getting ready that much easier! So, I was quickly able to pick out today's outfit: a deep berry peplum sweater, black minnie pants, and calf hair pumps. It's a super basic outfit, but sometimes simple is best.

Bacon and Cheddar Waffles

I'm always on the lookout for quick and easy dinner recipes. And on the nights when I really want to do the bare minimum, I love to make breakfast for dinner. It's so fun! My fiance and I rarely sit down and eat breakfast together, so it's kind of a treat for us.

Anyway, tonight I wanted to do something a little different. So, I decided to make bacon and cheddar waffles. They are savory, salty, fluffy, and oh so delicious. And easy. Did I already mention that?

-1 1/2 cups flour
-1 tsp baking powder
-1/4 tsp baking soda
-1/4 tsp salt
-1/4 tsp pepper
-1 3/4 cups buttermilk
-4 tbsp butter, melted
-1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
-5 strips of bacon, cooked and crumbled

1. Preheat a nonstick waffle iron to medium-high. In a large bowl, add flour, baking powder and soda, salt and pepper. Whisk to combine.

2. In a medium bowl, beat buttermilk, melted butter, and eggs. Pour the liquids into the dry ingredient blend, and to stir to form a thick batter. Add shredded cheese and crumbled bacon, stir so the ingredients are evenly mixed.

3. Spoon some of the batter onto the preheated waffle iron, and spread evenly. Cook until golden brown and crisp, following manufacturers instructions. Continue until all of batter has been used (recipe makes about six 6-inch waffles).
