Getting Nautical

Dress: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Tory Burch
Belt: Target
Earrings: Lauren Ralph Lauren

The last week or so has been rough, to say the least. I needed something bright, cheerful, and fun that was guaranteed to put a pep in my step. In my opinion, the easiest way to do that is with a printed Lilly Pulitzer dress. The one above, which I grabbed during the endless summer sale last year, is one of my favorites. It fits all of the above requirements, and has an added bonus - sailboats!

Welcome to the 50s

Top: J. Crew
Pants: Joie
Shoes: Vera Wang
Earrings: Juicy Couture
Bracelet: Vintage

These printed pants were just another great find from my Potomac Mills trip a few weeks back. Although they are pretty similar to my minnie pants that I wear all winter long, I thought they were just different enough that I could justify them.

These pants give me a 50s vibe, and also kind of remind me of something my mom might have worn, but in a good way. So, I kind of put myself in my moms mindset, and tried to think of how she would have put an outfit together with these pants. Shells were totally her thing for a long time (probably why she got this top for me as a gift), but this one feels much more modern with the addition of some pretty jewels around the collar. I went with some simple silver accessories and nude flats to let my fun pants be the main focus.

Gone Maxi

Dress: Vineyard Vines
Jacket: DKNY
Bracelets: Coach and Segio Lub
Earrings: Neiman Marcus Last Call
Shoes: BCBG Max Azria

I love everything about maxi dresses. I love how comfortable they are, that they look effortlessly chic, and that all of the extra fabric acts as a nice blanket whenever you are travelling or just work in a freezing cold office. With all of that being said, I only have three maxi dresses, and this one is a very recent addition. You see, I'm super super picky about the length. For me, a maxi dress must be sweeping the floor. I'm okay with a little bit of toe, but I don't want to see the tops of feet, or ankles. When maxi dresses are at that length, I've always thought they just look awkward - it cuts off the nice long line the body has otherwise.

So, when I spotted this brightly patterned dress while shopping at Potomac Mills last month, I got really excited. Just from looking at it on the hanger, I was almost positive that it would be long enough, and I was right. Once I brought it home, I was waiting for the perfect day to wear my fun dress - we're talking sunny, 80 degrees, and no humidity. Obviously, I gave up on that idea as it was never going to happen, and decided to wear it on a gray day, and I'm so glad I did. It's bright and colorful print brightened my day from the moment I put it on this morning, and the extra material was perfect while in the office.

Black Bean Dip

Picking out the perfect dish to bring my annual family reunion is always very tricky. I try to bring something hearty instead of sweet, and avoid bringing something similar to what others are bringing. Plus, I have the added difficulty that we're travelling from five hours away, so I have to find something that can either stay cold until serving, or room temperature.

After some extensive research, I finally decided on this black bean dip. It's hearty, super simple to make, and the best part - can be served cold, or warm with a sprinkling of cheese. Here's how you can make it:

-2 (14 oz) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
-1 chipolte chili
-1 tbs adobo sauce
-1 garlic clove
-2 tbsp chopped green onions
-1/4 tsp cumin
-2 tbsp fresh squeezed lime juice
-1/4 cup water
-salt and pepper to taste

Place all ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth. This can be served cold, or warm sprinkled with cheese on top. Enjoy!

Tiny Triangles

Dress: Kate Spade
Belt: Target
Shoes: BCBG Max Azria
Earrings: Neiman Marcus Last Call

I first spotted this triangle-print dress while shopping the Kate Spade sale a couple of months ago. Although I loved it from the get-go, even with the clearance price, it was still a bit out of my budget. However, I got lucky while shopping at Potomac Mills with my mom, and spotted the dress in my size yet again. Thankfully, this time it was significantly cheaper, and I was able to justify purchasing it.

While I kept it pretty simple for today, I know in the future this will be easy to pair with just about anything. Thanks to the large variety of color - from chocolate, to aqua, and just about everything else in between - I know I have plenty of coordinating cardigans, shoes, and jewelry to match. Plus, although this is a very summery dress, I'm determined to make it work for fall, too. Stay tuned!

Sunny State of Mind

Shirt: Kate Spade
Pants: Lilly Pulitzer
Shoes: Tory Burch
Necklace: Erickson Beamon for Target
Belt: Gap

When I saw the forecast for today, I couldn't help but get a little upset. We have been blessed with virtually beautiful weather all summer, so when I heard we were in for dark, gloomy skies and thunderstorms, I wasn't too pleased. Plus, it left me in a little dilemma for what to wear! Although on rainy days I typically stray away from pants, my office has been freezing.

I love that a great pair of khaki's always make me look much more pulled together than I actually feel. All the comfort of jeans, but with a more professional flair. To stay in a summer state of mind (I'm not ready for fall just yet!) I pulled on this sunny yellow-striped three quarter sleeve tee.

Blazers and Shorts

Shirt: Diane von Furstensburg
Camisole: Calvin Klein
Shorts: J. Crew
Blazer: L. K. Bennett
Shoes: Vera Wang
Earrings: Kenneth Cole

After work the other day, my fiance and were headed to a local bar to play trivia. I was already wearing a pretty cute outfit, but I wanted to switch it up so it was a little less stuffy, and I was more comfortable. An easy fix to this problem? Swapping out my dress pants for shorts. I was already wearing an almost all black ensemble, so it was easy to find a pair of matching shorts and head out the door.

Who knew such a simple fix could have such a major impact? Plus, I love the combination of a blazer and shorts together. Although I don't know if it's something that I would wear to work (though, I could probably get away with it), I think it's something I might wear on the weekends while going out with friends, or going out to dinner.

Retro Floral

Dress: Betsey Johnson
Belt: Target
Shoes: Tory Burch
Bracelet: vintage

I have to say, I made out like a bandit last weekend at Potomac Mills. Not only did I score with great deals, but I purchased several new dresses, which I am constantly on the lookout for. Now, I know this dress is pretty similar to yesterday's (and surprise, it's by the same designer), but I just couldn't resist. It's feminine, pink, and fits me like a glove - what else could I be looking for in a dress?

I also got these Tory Burch gold flats. If you read my blog regularly, you've probably noticed I already have a couple of pairs of gold flats that may appear to be similar, but trust me, they are different. While my other gold pairs are sequined or covered in glitter, these ones are a plain, metallic, Olympic medal gold color. Plus, the lining was so squishy - it felt like I was walking on little clouds.

V for Vintage

Dress: Betsey Johnson
Cardigan: Kate Spade
Shoes: Vera Wang
Necklace: vintage

While this dress isn't truly vintage by any means (I just bought it at the mall two weeks ago), it has such a vintage vibe about it that I fell in love with the minute I tried it on. From the nipped waist, to the demure neckline, and to the vibrant floral pattern, there's nothing about this dress I didn't like. To really play up my 50s inspired ensemble, I curled my hair, added a simple cardigan, and added a swipe of bold red lipstick once I was in the car. Although this seems like a summer dress, I'm already looking forward to pairing this with bright tights and a leather jacket in the fall!

101 in 1001: July 2014

I'm happy to report that I definitely made more of conscious effort to attempt to concentrate on my list this month! Well, at least in comparison to June. With that being said, here's what I accomplished:

7. Finish all the Harry Potter books
I had been checking tons of books out of the library, so I hadn't had much time to finish any books that I owned. Just this past weekend, I finally finished the fifth book in the Harry Potter series. It's been the hardest one for me to get through so far, but I really enjoyed it.

8. Watch all the Harry Potter movies.
Of course, after finishing the fifth book, I soon after had to watch the fifth movie. I'm doing that as I type up this post!

11. Read 20 new books. (The Death Cure)
This was the third and final book in the Maze Runner series. While not my favorite of the bunch, I just had to know how the whole series would end.

71. Write five hand written letters, just because.
One down, four more to go!

84. Wear bold lipstick every day for a week.
This was a lot of fun! Lipstick goes a long way in making you looked pulled together and fabulous with very little effort. Plus, I loved that I basically needed no other make-up other than a little mascara. From the first photo to the last, here's what I was wearing:
